Join The Q – The Qemists

February 3, 2009 UnitedState Leave a comment

The Qemists – 2009’s underground dance music superstars. One of the most eagerly awaited debut album of next year, “Join The Q” meshes the high energy of drum’n’bass and rock with a wide-ranging set of sounds that betray the fact that the mysterious trio were a band before they took to the decks. Dancehall, metal, electro, grime and hip hop all make their presence known across the album thanks to a host of respected guest vocalists. It’s like ram raiding the best record shop in West London with your Saxo’s ICE turned up to drown out the alarm.

The Qems have hooked up with the most established names in their fields. Faith No More’s legendary mischief-causing vocalist Mike Patton adds the Qemists to his exclusive list of collaborations which have included Massive Attack, Bjork and Kool Keith. As “Lost Weekend”’s pure rock riffing gives way to frantic d’n’b beats he’s totally comfortable, like it’s the sound he been waiting for.

Elsewhere Wiley, the godfather of grime and mentor to Dizzee Rascal, slots in perfectly over distorted Brit-hop beats and layers of guitars for “Dem Na Like Me”, his filthiest track ever. UK champion beatboxer Beardyman meanwhile follows hosting Fatboy Slim’s Big Beach Boutique with “Soundface”, a jaw-dropping accapella track like nothing that’s come before. Devlin Love from Alabama 3 adds soul to the savage energy of “S.W.A.G.”

There’s also a huge host of names from the drum’n’bass scene, from Jenna G, the queen of d’n’b, to veteran MC Navigator, via Friction’s mouthpiece MC ID. It’s a vote of confidence that confirms what clubbers up and down the country already know: The Qemists are the real deal. Chase and Status, Pendulum and Mampi Swift have all been raving about them on the scene, while on Radio 1 Zane Lowe called them “the future of music, what The Prodigy hinted at.” Even Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson has given them the rock seal of approval.

With such a posse in tow it looks like The Qemists are going the bust down every musical barrier going. If you want to be in their crew, you’d better join the Q.

Madlib's Dilla Tribute Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6

January 7, 2009 UnitedState Leave a comment

Madlib's Dilla Tribute Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6 CD to be released February 10

RELEASES FEBRUARY 10TH CD/LP

When Madlib followed J Dilla’s now-classic Donuts with an instrumental concept-album of his own, a series was born. “Beat Konducta,” the alias he often scribbled on the beat CDs he handed to friends and potential collaborators, left the realm of the unknown and entered the record-buying public’s conscious as Madlib’s latest nom de plume. His unedited CDs often wove quirky narratives, served as obsessive listening material to those lucky enough to hear them, and became raw working material for Madvillain, Jaylib, Ghostface, De La Soul, Talib Kweli and Erykah Badu.

The concept of the Beat Konducta series was simple: put Madlib’s raw beat tapes into album form – one by one on vinyl, with two volumes at a time appearing on sporadically released CDs.

The first two volumes of Beat Konducta, Movie Scenes, were a soundtrack to a movie that existed only in Madlib’s mind. It’s score ranged from Blaxploitation soul to African-psychedelia, from Tropicalia to moody progressive rock. The second installment took its listeners on a tour of Bollywood, circa 1975. Beat Konducta In India paid sincere tribute to musical giants largely unheard of by Western ears. And kept the funk levels up all the way.

Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6: A Tribute to… is a 42-track piece dedicated to the late J Dilla. Madlib and J. Rocc – arguably Dilla’s closest musical compatriots during his time spent in Los Angeles – lovingly remember their friend and reflect on his boundless influence. As was the case with Donuts and in keeping with the Beat Konducta’s all-embracing musical bent, this album does not settle into one groove for too long. The result is a transfixing, sometimes jarring, and always soulful homage to the man Madlib crowned “King Of The Beats.”

Press Release :

When Wes Pentz released his debut album, “Florida,” on Big Dada in the autumn of 2004, he was a relatively obscure DJ and producer from Philadelphia. Through the success of his club night, Hollertronix, production, tireless unearthing of new dance trends from around the world (in particular, Brazil), the inception of his own label Mad Decent and his never less than brilliant DJ sets, Diplo is now a force in music culture across the planet.

As a result, he’s become a go-to name for production and remix work for some of the most exciting acts around. “Decent Work For Decent Pay” provides an overview of what Diplo has been up to for the last four years, starting with classic tracks and out-takes from “Florida,” taking in production work on such huge records as M.I.A’s “Paper Planes,” Kano’s “Reload It” and Bonde Do Role’s first album for Domino, plus a host of remixes for the likes of CSS, Spank Rock, Bloc Party, Hot Chip, Black Lips and Peter, Bjorn & John.

Also included on the finished version will be a data file of mp3s including the individual tunes recorded for the “Diplo Rhythm,” the Johnny Blaze remix of “Way More”, the video for “Percao” and Diplo’s remix oif Spoon’s “Don’t You Evah”.

In theory achingly hip, Diplo’s greatest achievement is in fact an uncomplicated love of rhythm and movement – unpretentious, hyper-charged and, at root, fun. “Decent Work For Decent Pay” gets your party started. Right?

Please note: Promos include a remix of Daft Punk’s “Harder Better Faster Stronger” that, due to clearance difficulties, will not be included on the finished album.
